Packaged for Your Valentine: Is Seasonal Packaging Worth It?

It’s that time of year again. You’re probably used to seeing pink and red hearts, fluffy bears, seasonal packaging and Cupid whizzing around by now. As soon as the winter holidays come to a close, it’s time to share the love.

But does it really work?

Do consumers really prefer the Valentine version of your product?

According to Packaging Digest, 65% of US consumers prefer seasonal packaging to regular packaging.

That means over half of US consumers are more likely to reach for the seasonal themed batch of goods. It’s all about the visual appeal.

Think about it, the main reason chocolates and baked goods are purchased during the month of February is due to the nature of Valentine’s Day. In spirit, the consumer will reach for the red heart chocolate bag instead.

According to the Complete Guide to Seasonal Packaging by Mary Davies, “in order to stay competitive with the big brands it is essential that you adopt seasonal packaging.”

In a Label & Narrow Web article, Superbrands founder Marcel Knobil supports Davies statement by expressing, “Thanks to impressive print packaging, brands can seduce customers into a change of purchasing vote at the point of purchase. We would end up with less brand and more bland were it not for the attention that the packaging attracts.”

So seasonal packaging is the right idea, but how do you know if it’s the right idea for you?

Unfortunately, it does depend on what industry you are in. A company that sells plastic tubing would not benefit as much as a company known for their gourmet chocolates.

Davies expands, “a bakery is much more likely to benefit from changing their packaging than a stationary supplier. Think about your business model, your products and your customers and then decide whether there would be a benefit to using seasonal packaging.”

So if seasonal packaging is right for you, there are two important things to remember before you get started:

  1. Don’t confuse your customer
    By not make your designs similar to another product you already offer, it could confuse your customer and cause them to shy away from the product altogether.
  2. Don’t overestimate
    If you don’t have your own in-house label printer, it’s easier to make your packaging labels a limited time offer vs. overstocking on labels that will ultimately go to waste.

Whether you are a business small or large, it is definitely worthwhile to invest in seasonal packaging.

  1. Create a tradition
    Pair your product with something extra in the spirit of the season, and keep it going each year.

  4. Create a campaign
    Build “fanfare” around your product launch.
  5. If you can’t avoid clichés, have fun with them!
    Look for visual and tonal treatments that evoke the season without being overly dependent on overused symbols, or look for ways to turn them on their head.

O&H Danish Bakery

The family-owned Danish bakery located in Racine, Wisconsin enhanced the appearance of their bakery labels by printing with the Kiaro! inkjet label printer.

Jody’s Popcorn Labels POP! with the Kiaro! Label Printer!

In Virginia Beach, Jody’s Popcorn sells freshly made, caramel coated, chocolate drizzled and savory popcorn snacks. With their unique line of product flavors, they rely on their Kiaro! label printer to produce the famous popcorn labels that pop!

What Makes It Gourmet?

jodys_bagsMichael Katz, Vice President of Jody’s Popcorn, explains, “People often ask what gourmet popcorn is. What gourmet means to us is that we use the highest quality ingredients that we can find because we are very concerned about our flavor profile and the quality of our product.”

We traveled to Virginia Beach to get a taste of what Jody’s Popcorn is made of, and see how they use their QuickLabel printer to make their popcorn labels look as good as their freshly popped batches taste.

It’s About Quality AND Quantity

“Our quality is not just about the product, but the overall experience at Jody’s,” stresses Katz, “At our oceanfront store, we make freshly popped popcorn right there.”

While the quality of their popcorn is priority, their quantity demands (no matter how big or small) are important to them as well.

We had lots of demand for our products, so Jody’s leased facilities that were able to produce much larger quantities of popcorn. We were then able to label that product and offer a much wider variety at our oceanfront store, also satisfying the needs of whole sale customers.”

But with that expansion, Jody’s needed a reliable printer that could take on their growth, as well as take care of quick in-store demands. As the business grew, so did Jody’s product line. It became less affordable to order thousands of popcorn labels for all of their many flavors, changing order sizes, and special requests for custom labeling.

“What we had before was outsource printing,” explains Katz, “We were making a lot of products and sending a lot of products to be outsourced. But the cost of having all that inventory sitting on our shelves didn’t seem to make much sense.”

Browndog Creamery’s Micro Batch Gourmet Ice Cream Meets Micro Batch Label Printing

With an ever-changing variety of ice cream flavors as evocative as Dragon Bite, Tuscan Sun, Buttered Berry Brioche, and French Press Mocha, the owners of Browndog Creamery needed a labeling solution that could adapt to label changes on-the-fly.

For example, they may need 20  labels for Triple Vanilla this morning, and 15 for Mystery Cookie this afternoon.  Luckily for owners Brian Scherle and Paul Gabriel, they found the Kiaro! label printer to print labels for their pints of ice cream on demand, in the exact quantity that they need.

Browndog Creamery, a “micro-creamery” located in the heart of downtown Northville Michigan, west of Detroit, brings customers delicious and unique handcrafted ice creams.

Being a micro-creamery, as explained by co-owner Paul Gabriel, “basically means that we make our ice cream in very small batches. We’re not a mass factory where we make thousands of gallons of ice cream. We make about four or five gallons at a time for each flavor.”

Browndog Creamery’s unique flavor combinations are all created in-house by Gabriel and Scherle. “I always tell people I refuse to make butter pecan, so instead we make a bourbon pecan,” said Gabriel. “For our Cinco de Mayo we made a Holy Guacamole ice cream, and that’s the type of stuff that we really like: the really unique, creative stuff that you’re not going to find anywhere else. “

The Perfect Label For Every Single Batch

Browndog rotates flavors of ice creams so frequently because each batch made in their micro-creamery is only a few gallons. Even before they opened their business, they knew that using pre-printed labels wouldn’t make any sense, because buying minimum orders of labels would lead to excessive costs and way too much label inventory for their small backroom.

gourmet ice cream labels“I knew we would be running small batches of ice cream and I didn’t want to take an inventory of a hundred or a thousand labels of one flavor because I knew we might only need ten,” said Gabriel. “The Kiaro! has been a wonderful fit in our business to allow us to make these very small run labels and customize them to everything that we needed to do.”

“Being able to create products and without having to go to a mass printing,” has been a boon to business said Scherle. “Using the Kiaro! printer to label our ice cream, and to create amazing and attractive packaging is just part and parcel of creating our products.”

Scherle described his first impressions of the Kiaro!, “When it was delivered I found that it’s bright purple. Upon seeing it, I was pleasantly surprised that the Kiaro! looks as fun as it is to use.  It’s a good addition to our shop.”

Kiaro! Labels Handle Freezing Temps  

One of Browndog’s chief concerns was whether or not their Kiaro! labels would stand up to the freezing temperatures necessary for storing ice cream.

“The synthetic material that we use for the pint labels is pretty resistant to water best label printerand we actually label the pints after they’ve gone through the freezing process,” said Gabriel.  “We were a little skeptical about how they would adhere to a frozen pint, but the Kiaro! labels do quite well.”

“It’s surprising how fast the printer is,” said Gabriel.  “We have taught some of our employees how to use the Kiaro! and besides its flexibility and other benefits, it’s also very easy to use. The first time one of our managers used it she thought, ‘oh goodness I have to print out 150 labels that’s going to take all day’ and they started to come out and she was trying hard to keep up with the printer, and roll labels up so they weren’t all over the floor, it was actually quite humorous,” added Scherle. “The print speed is amazing.”

How to Comply with DQSA Requirements for Serialization and Traceability

What is the Drug Quality Security Act?

The Drug Quality Security Act (DQSA) is an important US law that aims to create and establish an electronic traceability system for pharmaceutical drugs. As of January 2015, the new serialization system began.

With this new policy, prescription drugs will now be tracked by the FDA. They’ll be tracked down to the individual dose by a serial number that will be printed right on the label of your prescription drugs. The serial number will be stored in an FDA database.  If you’re wondering what the label needs to look like, it’ll be something like this:

 

But what truly are the benefits of traceability? Well, first and foremost, it’s important to comply with federal regulations. But, besides that, you can actually enhance the reputation of your brand, and draw attention to your safe practices.

    • As of January 2015, the lot-level traceability system begins.
    • As of late November of 2017, manufacturers will be required to serialize pharmaceutical products.
    • By November 27, 2023, the law will require the complete transition to an electronic, interoperable traceability system at the package level. (source)

 

Why do we need the DQSA?

The DQSA keeps consumers safer. You may recall the incident in 2013 in which a strain of fungal meningitis was spread via a small compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts. The DQSA was strengthened as a direct result of that event.

The new DQSA serialization requirement will allow the FDA to view a product’s history, much like a browsing history on an Internet application. By allowing the FDA to view history, it will enable suspect products and illegitimate products to be sniffed out and taken care of before a consumer gets to them.

Who Does the DQSA affect?

The DQSA will affect:pills

  • Wholesale distributors
  • Repackagers
  • Third-party logistics
  • Pharmacies

All of these groups will have different rules to follow when it comes to complying with the Drug Quality and Security Act.

DQSA Definitions

  • Manufacturer:  When the DQSA defines a manufacturer, it means a company that:

“(A) Holds an application approved under section 505 or such a license issued under section 351 or the Public Health Service Act for such a [pharmaceutical] product, or if such a product is not the subject of an approved application or license, the person who manufactured the product.

(B) a co-licensed partner of that company

(C) an affiliate of that company that receives the product directly from the producer or a co-licensed partner (Section 581)

  • Re-Packager: A re-packager is considered “a person who owns or operates an establishment that repacks and re-labels a product or package for further re-sale or distribution without a further transaction.” (Section 581)
  • Third Party Logistics:Third Party Logistics is the activity of outsourcing activities related to Logistics and Distribution. (Logistics List)
  • Wholesale Distributor: A Certified Wholesale Distributor is a company who handles the wholesale shipments for the manufacturer of a product (or in some cases is the product manufacturer). They have a warehouse, distribution center and ship products directly to the retailer. (World Wide Brands)

Yosé Chateauvert, native to Québec, has just recently joined the QuickLabel family in Montréal. A family man with a passion for sales, Yose is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and a big fan of label printing (and the Montreal Canadiens).

QuickLabel: Are you excited to join the QuickLabel team? Why?

YC: Yes I am, I did my research on the company and we are the leader in the industry. We carry a good reputation and we have been there for a long time.

QuickLabel: What unique skills do you bring to the team?

Yose: People talk to me and listen to me, we can develop a relationship based on trust. I’m really happy that I’m going to be meeting a lot of new people in my sales territory of Québec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

QL: Where did you grow up?

YC: I grew up in Amos; a little town in Abitibi-Temiscamingue, which is 6 hours north of Montréal, QC.

QL: What are your goals for your new position?

YC: Developing the market on my territory in Eastern Canada as much as possible so I can make a good living and be able to take good care of my 3 kids.

QL: What was your first impression as a new QuickLabel employee?

YC: Great company and great people! I felt welcome as soon as I stepped foot in the Brossard office and the same when I came here to the World Headquarters (in Rhode Island, USA).

QL: What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have any hobbies?

YC: I pretty much run around the arenas for the kids in the winter and soccer fields in the summer. But I do play hockey myself twice a week in the winter time and soccer once a week in the summer. I do love to play golf when I have 4-5 hours to spare but it doesn’t happen often.

QL: What is your favorite QuickLabel product and why?

YC:  I like the Kiaro! family of label printers, and the original Kiaro! label printer is my favorite; high resolution, high quality the perfect solution for any businesses in need of in-house label printing.

QL: Can you tell us why you’re so passionate about knowing your customers?

YC: Knowing their specific needs and expectations help us focus our effort to best suit their needs with the best label printer and media we can offer to our customers.

QL: What is your favorite thing to eat? Is there any restaurant in particular that you love?

YC: I love to eat. I love seafood, tapas, any pasta dish and a good steak on the BBQ. I don’t have a favorite restaurant –  I love to try new restaurants. Although, last year I went to a tapas place downtown Montreal called Pica Pica and this one is worth going back.

QL: Tell us a little about your family.

YC: My parents still live in the suburbs of Amos by a lake where I love to go with the kids to recharge my batteries. I have two brothers they are both carpenters one lives in Montreal and the other lives in France in the Vercors region near Grenoble, which is in the French Alpes. I have 3 children; 2 boys and a girl in between. Gabriel who is 14, Rafaëlle who is 12 and Thomas-Elliot who is 9, all 3 are into sports; soccer in the summer. And in the winter we have hockey for the boys and ringuette for my daughter.

QL: What are some of your favorite things? 

YC: I like to watch Hockey on TV (Go, Habs, Go!) and I do love to have a good meal and good wine with family or friends.

Doc’s Tea Prints On-Demand With Their Kiaro! Label Printer
