For those of you who could not attend, it’s time to for a PACK EXPO 2017 recap! If you weren’t able to see us at our booth, this year’s PACK EXPO Las Vegas was one of the most attended, most successful shows for QuickLabel & TrojanLabel.

Selling units right off the floor at both the main PACK EXPO booth and Healthcare Packaging booth, we were ecstatic from the positive reception of our new business unit and product releases.

Expanding Our Printing Solutions

Since our business unit expanded to include TrojanLabel™, a growing force in the digital label press, overprinting and specialty printers industry (February 2017), we had yet to host a trade show together in the USA –making this year’s PACK EXPO Las Vegas all the more exciting.

A fantastic complement to our tabletop label printers, TrojanLabel products include the T3-OP (Trojan3), a digital professional packaging and converting overprinting system and the T2 (Trojan2), a sophisticated digital label mini press and more exclusive printers released at the show.

The acquisition of TrojanLabel helped to amplify the strength and capabilities of both brands as known leaders in the industry of tabletop label printers for in-house custom color labels and professional label presses and specialty printers.

Being our first show together in the USA, we were ecstatic to share our experience at PACK EXPO together as well as see how well it was recognized by the current and new customers that visited our booth!

How to Make Your Custom Cosmetics Labels Attractive and Effective

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

In the cosmetics industry, looks matter. There’s a lot of pressure for product packaging to portray the end results –even when working with small surfaces.

But while trying to catch the consumer’s eye, there are still regulations products must follow. So how can you make your custom cosmetic labels both attractive and effective?

First Things First: Product Requirements

Regardless of your product line, you need to be aware of the industry requirements.

What are the most common rules and regulations for labeling in the cosmetics industry?

According to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, it is prohibited to market cosmetics that are adulterated or misbranded as well as while in interstate commerce.

FDA regulations are required for any product, except soap, intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering appearance.

A cosmetics label is considered misbranded if:

  • labeling is false or misleading
  • label does not state the name and address of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor or the net quantity of contents
  • the required information is not stated prominently, with conspicuousness and in terms that it is read and understood by consumers under customary conditions of purchase and use the container or its fill is misleading

Read the full list of FDA cosmetics labeling standards here.

Make Compliance Easier

Ensure products meet all FDA regulations and easily maintain labels with an in-house label printer – this includes overseas,  certifying compliance within each country.

Printing in-house also offers a much more affordable option compared to outsourced printing.

By printing in your facility, you have the ability to produce large or short runs of labels as needed with expiration dates, ingredients lists, allergen warnings, barcodes, organic and natural certifications.

Check out some of our favorite commercial color label printer options here!

Make Sure Your Products Have What They Need

In addition to FDA requirements, environmental exposure can require a higher need for durability.

If you offer lotion, body wash or facial cleansers, you may want to consider a printer that applies water-resistant labels. This will help protect your labels fading or peeling.

Utilizing these resistant labels will bring your products to another level of professionalism. By adhering to both FDA standards and product needs, your cosmetics will perform effectively.

Watch how CJ’s Unique Boutique uses their durable QuickLabel printer to label all of their lotions and creams:

Stand Out On The Shelves!

Looks matter in this industry.

Makers of cosmetics and personal care products don’t just need a lot of labels – they need a lot of different labels. One body lotion alone can be available in dozens of different scents, array of bottles, tubs and more.

Your product packaging is what makes you stand out from the competition. What catches eyes on the shelves can be the difference between the purchase of your brand over a competitors.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective way to enhance your cosmetics label designs, an in-house label printer is the best solution.

Not only will printing cosmetics labels in-house save money, but it is perfect for short-runs of seasonal products, new scents, sizes and formulations – especially when it comes to the design process.

Using your own label printer will allow you to control your label from start to finish – making sure it showcases your product as envisioned.

Make Your Custom Cosmetics Labels Attractive and Effective With The Kiaro!

If you’re looking for a photo-quality, colorfast label printer with high-production rates, we recommend the Kiaro! color label printer (as used by CJ’s Unique Boutique).

The Kiaro! is an extraordinarily fast printer with the ability to produce beautiful, vibrant color labels in astounding 1200 dpi.

“It’s a cost effective time saving printer. It creates excellent quality labels for our packaging, and I couldn’t be happier.”
– Ryan Flynt, CJ’s Unique Boutique

By acknowledging your products packaging design, durability of labels and FDA standards, custom cosmetics labels are able to function effectively while attracting consumers to your products.

3 Easy Steps to Make Your Wine and Beer Labels Stand Out

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

If you brew beer or bottle wine, you already know the challenges that occur once your products are sent to market. You need to make your wine and beer labels stand out in order to get on the consumer’s radar.

But, the shadows of big name-brand competitors make it extremely difficult for new, local breweries and wineries to thrive.

How Do They Do It?

How is it so easy for these companies to stay on top? It’s all in the package branding.

With well-known brands, it’s easy for consumers to walk into a store and pluck a product off the shelves. The familiarity, years of experience and trustworthiness of a brand make these decisions a no-brainer. But everyone has to start somewhere, right?

What Can You do to Make Your Brews Stand Out?

A number of things (these big companies didn’t come out of nowhere).

It all started with an idea and a plan. After determining the basics, there are a few extra things you need to make your wine and beer labels stand out and give your brand that extra push.

1. It’s All in the Packaging

Humans are visual beings, so first impressions matter. Especially when targeting first time buyers browsing through the aisles of their local liquor store.

In fact, the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text, and 90 percent of information transmitted to the brain is visual.

Since consumers can only view your products as they browse, what they find aesthetically pleasing makes all the difference.

According to Barrett Brynestad, Associate Creative Director/Designer for TDA Boulder, the package should tell consumers as much as possible about the beer, from the occasion to taste profile and overall brand ethos.

Our advice: Design your product label well and design it to be easily recognized. It can be as simple as your color scheme and font, qualifying image or logo, etc. Whatever it is, it has to be unique to you. Investing in a talented artist or graphic designer always helps.

After all, your brand logo is arguably the most important part of your product.

Check out some examples of branded beer labels that understand the importance of story-telling branding.

2. Save Face on the Shelves…and Money in Your Pocket

Once you have successfully created your brand label, it’s time to start labeling your cans and bottles.

Outsourced printing can get expensive. For local wineries or breweries, it may be wiser to print your product labels in-house. In addition to avoiding fees and delays, you’ll be able to control the entire process within your own facility.

If you choose to print in-house, you must make sure the label printer meets all requirements your products need.

For example, wine and beer displayed in store freezers or chilling in coolers need labels that withstand frozen temperatures.

After all, it wouldn’t look very professional to have your labels wrinkling from condensation or losing adhesion and peeling off.

In combination, your printing system needs to produce clear, vivid, photo-quality labels to attract the consumers’ eye – and make your wine and beer labels stand out!

QuickLabel’s line of in-house label printers allow your business to meet all the requirements (aesthetic and physical) for printing labels on-demand and in-house.

These printing systems are perfect for the craft beer tradition of experimentation, adaptability and small batch production.

Our advice: Learn more about QuickLabel’s capabilities and benefits with printing frozen labels, wine and beer labels to see if they’re right for your business. You can also browse the full line of in-house color label printers here.

3. Get Your Name Out There!

It’s time. You’ve made a solid brand name for yourself with the packaging (and product) to prove it.

Investing in trade shows, tastings at local liquor stores and advertising (print or video), is the next step in getting your brand recognized. The more people see your product, the more natural it becomes to pick it up.

Our advice: By promoting your brand, you are showing consumers that you are real; you have a story and a taste unique to your product. By investing in these promotions, you are building the trust of your brand.

These three steps will change the way your wine and beer products are perceived – now a known brand rising above the sea of shelves. Good luck!

4 Reasons Why You Should Be Making Your Own Food & Beverage Labels

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

Many companies outsource their product labels to save financially and produce efficiently. But is outsourcing really the most efficient route? For small to medium sized business owners, outsourcing is not always the best solution. Depending on your business size and needs, you may be better off making your own food & beverage labels in-house.

Impression Technology Europe explains, “Recently, another type of printing has become more attainable for smaller companies…digital ‘short run’ label printers. Not only is the initial investment much more affordable but the cost per print is extremely low. After doing the math, most clients will find it will be much more cost effective than outsourcing and based on the output.”

How do you know if this is right for you? Here are four reasons why you should be making your own food & beverage labels in-house:

1. Outsourced Printing Comes at a Price

We mean that both literally and figuratively. While using another facility to generate your food labels might seem like weight off your shoulders, that may not be the case.

Passing the task to an outside source can end up severely delaying your labeling process. Why? Not only will you have your company’s shipping schedule to track, but the arrival of your outsourced shipment as well.

If an outsourced shipment becomes delayed, so will the orders your company was originally scheduled to deliver. For small business owners, this can lead to a lot of unhappy customers or market vendors.

These delays will happen, and so do errors. Labeling errors can take more of a toll on your business production line than a delay in shipment.

The unexpected misprint forces your business to return and reorder labels. Misprints can cause setbacks and affect the use by/sell by dates on your products. This is especially true for made to order businesses, which can lead to wasted products.

If your business has experienced these delays, you may want to consider an in-house or on-demand label printer. With the ability to print labels in your own facility, there will be no more error or shipment delays affecting your product line. What’s more, these printers give you the ability to create your own use by/sell by dates with complete label customization.

2. Not All Environments Are Created Equal

Making your own food & beverage labels is also a huge plus when selling products that must be stored in specific environmental requirements.

It’s important for frozen foods to have unique and attractive labels, too. After all, it is your brand. But, it’s equally important that your frozen food labels don’t fail. Using the wrong label can lead to wrinkles due to condensation, fading due to exposure or loss of adhesion, falling off in low temperatures. One should not be sacrificed for the other.

If your business is using regular pre-printed labels, chances are, the labels won’t hold up in your storage environment.

The ability to maintain complete control over your label materials and printing process will allow your business to have a streamlined, efficient process with branded labels that look the part.

An easy in-house printing solution is QuickLabel’s Kiaro! or Kiaro! D inkjet label printers. Both printers are known for printing frozen food labels that don’t peel off in high-quality 1200 dpi imagery.

With the right in-house printer, you’ll have professional frozen food or beverage labels printed instantly and can be applied to products that are already frozen, or before they go into the freezer.

You can check out both options here.

3. Keep Up with FDA Regulations

Of course, keeping up with the FDA’s changing regulations and formats can greatly affect your product labels.

The intimidating process includes font restrictions, mandatory statements, allergen alerts and difficult calculations for daily values.

As a food manufacturer, you want to spend your energy on your recipes, production, branding and sales – not on interpreting FDA labeling mandates or trying to explain the requirements to an outside vendor.

However, it is absolutely necessary to adhere to FDA regulations to avoid recalls and present your customer with the quality and transparency they deserve.

An in-house label printer is especially valuable in these situations. For every change, the label design and format can be immediately customized in your own facility.

What’s more, by owning an in-house label printer, you don’t have to worry about overstock or wasted labels due to changes in regulations. This gives you more flexibility in your printing process, introducing the option of seasonal or promotional runs.

Making your own food & beverage labels gives you the ability to print the exact number of labels you need for what’s in-stock, on-demand.

4. You Deserve to Be In Control of Your Business

Your labels are the face of your brand, so you always want to put your best foot forward.

With outsourced labels, you don’t get to have complete control over your labeling process. Edits take longer, shipments get delayed and labels are bound to be wasted.

In-house printing has evolved with small, tabletop label printers for businesses. These label printers serve as a central database, with the ability to store, revise, locate and print any design on-demand –ultimately opening new doors for small to medium sized businesses.

If you want to be in control of your business or are experiencing any of the above labeling issues, it may be time to consider taking your production line in-house.

QuickLabel specializes in on-demand, tabletop label printers. For someone in the food and beverage industry interested in quality, short-run labels, they are worth looking in to.

Packaged for Your Valentine: Is Seasonal Packaging Worth It?

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

It’s that time of year again. You’re probably used to seeing pink and red hearts, fluffy bears, seasonal packaging and Cupid whizzing around by now. As soon as the winter holidays come to a close, it’s time to share the love.

But does it really work?

Do consumers really prefer the Valentine version of your product?

According to Packaging Digest, 65% of US consumers prefer seasonal packaging to regular packaging.

That means over half of US consumers are more likely to reach for the seasonal themed batch of goods. It’s all about the visual appeal.

Think about it, the main reason chocolates and baked goods are purchased during the month of February is due to the nature of Valentine’s Day. In spirit, the consumer will reach for the red heart chocolate bag instead.

According to the Complete Guide to Seasonal Packaging by Mary Davies, “in order to stay competitive with the big brands it is essential that you adopt seasonal packaging.”

In a Label & Narrow Web article, Superbrands founder Marcel Knobil supports Davies statement by expressing, “Thanks to impressive print packaging, brands can seduce customers into a change of purchasing vote at the point of purchase. We would end up with less brand and more bland were it not for the attention that the packaging attracts.”

So seasonal packaging is the right idea, but how do you know if it’s the right idea for you?

Unfortunately, it does depend on what industry you are in. A company that sells plastic tubing would not benefit as much as a company known for their gourmet chocolates.

Davies expands, “a bakery is much more likely to benefit from changing their packaging than a stationary supplier. Think about your business model, your products and your customers and then decide whether there would be a benefit to using seasonal packaging.”

So if seasonal packaging is right for you, there are two important things to remember before you get started:

  1. Don’t confuse your customer
By not make your designs similar to another product you already offer, it could confuse your customer and cause them to shy away from the product altogether.
  2. Don’t overestimate
If you don’t have your own in-house label printer, it’s easier to make your packaging labels a limited time offer vs. overstocking on labels that will ultimately go to waste.

Whether you are a business small or large, it is definitely worthwhile to invest in seasonal packaging.

But where do you start?

To get the creative juices flowing, we’ll leave you with Hornall Anderson’s top tips of incorporating holiday packaging into your business:

  1. Create a tradition
Pair your product with something extra in the spirit of the season, and keep it going each year.
  2. Make collectibles
Packages that are part of a set or able to be repurposed in an innovative way.
  3. Make gifting easier
Gifting through unique or personalized packaging is beautiful enough to be a gift itself.
  4. Create a campaign
Build “fanfare” around your product launch.
  5. If you can’t avoid clichés, have fun with them!
Look for visual and tonal treatments that evoke the season without being overly dependent on overused symbols, or look for ways to turn them on their head.

Why Seasonal Packaging Can Help You Gain Customers

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

It’s that time of year again; time to decorate your store windows, run holiday sales and, most importantly, switch up your product labels. Why? Seasonal packaging can help gain customers.

That’s right. It’s the holiday season! Everyone wants to get in the spirit, and what’s more cheerful than a festively packaged product?

If you print your labels in-house, this isn’t a hard task to complete. But if you don’t print in-house, that is something you may want to reconsider.

Holidays Can Equal More Sales

During the holidays, you could be missing out on major sales revenue without seasonal packaging. Why?

Products that are polished, seasonal and unique have a better chance of being picked up and chosen over a similar product.

Recent studies show that product labels are much more critical in the buyer’s journey than anticipated.

Ben Schubert from Nielsen’s Innovation Practice in Europe was recently involved in a report analyzing the topic stating, “Package design is the dark horse of the marketing world. It receives little attention compared to other marketing disciplines, and its impact tends to be vastly underestimated.”

More often than not, what we think are the little things actually end up being much bigger.

Humans are highly visual beings

When we see something aesthetically pleasing, it catches our eye. Your product may be exactly what the consumer is looking for, but if not presented the right way, it is easily passed over.

This is especially heightened during the holiday seasons, where our eyes are trained to pick up on certain color patterns and images. Not convinced?

Nielson continues, “Back-to-basics marketing such as how essential it is to stand out at the shelf has become slightly lost due to marketers’ increasing focus on where to advertise in a media-saturated world.

Nearly 60% of product decisions are made at the shelf, and 56% of European consumers say in-store discovery is one of their top information sources for new products, compared to 45% for TV ads.”

Now those are staggering numbers. More than half of consumers’ decisions are made at the shelf? Presuming the setup is that of a regular market, that means more than half of the buyers decisions are based on the label alone.

That’s something to pay attention to.

It is more important than ever to remain ahead of the curve

And utilizing information like this will help push you to the forefront.

Think about it, which product would be more likely purchased on the spot: a branded box of truffles or a holiday packaging edition of similar truffles? The presentation matters. Most would go with the latter.

This year, while speaking on a similar topic, Gillian Christie, founder & CEO of adVentures Academy reveals that, “Design message on packaging can be the make or break point with your target audience.”

And we couldn’t agree more.

Your seasonal packaging and even personalized packaging can help you gain customers, giving you an edge on your competition and a greater chance for consumers to try your products.

Christie continues, “Understanding consumer behavior and identifying the exact buying motivators, hot buttons and the specific ‘conversion factor’ for that target audience is the differentiating factor between a good design and a great design.”

Now that the labels and packaging have been identified as such a large conversion factor (60%), the opportunity to greatly increase your consumer base is within your grasp.

So how do you use this to your advantage?

Take control over your production line and print your labels in-house.

Managing your labeling process can reap a plethora of benefits in addition to catching the customers’ eye. With less room for errors, no wait time or shipping, and reduced waste, your in-house label printer or packaging system would be earning its keep by saving and earning you money.

What are you waiting for?

It’s the holiday season! Get inspired! Feel the magic! And make your packaging great.

Kiaro! Couples: Get to Know Our Sweethearts

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

This Valentine’s Day, we wanted to get you to know more about the beautiful relationships we’ve brought to life. Especially the lives of our Kiaro! couples.

As you’ve probably seen in our latest Facebook post, we recently named the Kiaro! and Rewinder our couple of the year. After all, they’ve created some wonderful labels together.

But they aren’t the only relationship we’ve taken notice of. Looking back, we realize we’ve become quite the matchmaking system.

While we love all of the customer relationships we’ve created, there are several sweethearts that stand out. Coincidentally, they make some pretty sweet products.

O&H Danish Bakery

The family-owned Danish bakery located in Racine, Wisconsin enhanced the appearance of their bakery labels by printing with the Kiaro! inkjet label printer.

O&H Bakery is known for their traditional Danish Kringle, a flaky oval pastry that takes 3 days to bake, with a variety of seasonal toppings, fillings and icings. They come in flavors such as the Wisconsin, Cream Cheese and one of their most popular, Almond Kringle.

Their Kringle’s are so popular that they are not only enjoyed by President Obama, but by thousands of buyers around the world with varying tastes.

With their online and mail order business, they have order requests for any mix of products come in at any time, giving them no way to predict the exact quantity of labels they need for each type of Kringle.

Finding pre-printed labels costly and wasteful, O&H knew they needed a printer that could accommodate for the unpredictability of demand.

With the Kiaro!, O&H not only avoids having to purchase large quantities of pre-printed labels, but is now able to print labels in short-run batches for its growing mail order business and custom corporate gift program, whenever they’re needed.

After bringing this Kiaro! couple together, they not only earned new customers, but earned more business from their existing customers.

“I’m a firm believer that people eat with their eyes…We really want good detail to well represent the image that we are trying to portray on the label, and I think that the Kiaro! printer does just that for us.”– Eric Olesen, Owner, O&H Bakery

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe™

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe knows all things key lime.

Despite what you may have thought, their signature item is not just their delectable key lime pies. They are known for their wide variety of sauce and dressing concoctions and especially their dark chocolate pie bars, which are shipped throughout the country.

kermitsEven though they produce thousands of orders, they still have the need to make a lot of their products in small, artisan batches, on-demand.

Instead of continuing to grasp at predictions for label demand based on what products they might create or ship, resulting in excessive inventory of labels, Kermit’s realized they needed something that would give them labels in a moment’s notice – and they found that in the Kiaro!.

When Kermit’s met the Kiaro!, you could say it was love at first print…err, bite…I mean, sight! They were able to print whatever they needed, fast.

Lucky for them, the Kiaro! is a good investment for anyone who prints in small batches, or needs control over quantity. What’s more, the Kiaro! never diminishes their company color or label quality. It supports their branding fully.

Printing in 1200 dpi, Kermit’s now has the ability to print consistent and intricate color labels that are nothing less than eye-catching. Look at this Kiaro! couple, what a pair!

“It’s rare that I will print 2,000 of a particular label. I’m much more likely to print 75 of something and 200 of another, and [it’s a good investment] to have the flexibility to be able to do that on the fly.”— Karen Puglisi, Sales and Marketing Director, Kermit’s

Amoretti®

Hailing from Oxnard, CA, Amoretti does things a little differently.

Instead of making the sweets and treats, they supply the ingredients for executive chefs, gourmet pastry makers and food and beverage brands to make products taste just right. This includes high quality ingredients and flavorings such as first-class syrups, coffee flavorings, pastry ingredients and especially their premium martini mixes.

amorettiWhat else was different about Amoretti? Well, they weren’t exactly monogamous in their needs. In other words, they loved the Kiaro! so much, they wanted more.

Two more to be exact.

Why? Because their trio of Kiaro!’s was exactly what they were looking for.

You see, Amoretti wanted to be able to properly showcase the quality of their products, while still being able to maintain the rate at which they produced new and existing products.

Some Amoretti flavorings sell faster than others, so they needed a match that was versatile but still able to produce high quality labels to match their high quality products.

It’s not that one Kiaro! didn’t do the job for them, not at all. Printing consistently at 8 ips (40 feet per min) and in 1200dpi on demand, they just wanted more of what they had found to support their growing business.

And who could blame them?

With their Kiaro!’s, Amoretti is not only able to keep up with their extremely fast and fresh production schedule, but they can now create custom labels with the most intricate detail, readable barcodes and accurate nutrition labels.

“Our products are high-end pastry ingredients. We’re on the top shelf. Our Kiaro! printers allow us to look that way.” – Nick Squires, IT and Social Media Coordinator, Amoretti

Browndog Creamery

Last but certainly not least, we made quite the match with Browndog Creamery.

Located in the heart of downtown Northville, Michigan, they’re a “micro-creamery” that brings customers delicious and unique handcrafted ice creams. Some of their seasonal flavors include Gingerbread, Old Man Winter, Boozy Eggnog and the ever popular French Press Mocha.

browndogThey had a lot of needs, but it certainly wasn’t their fault. As a micro-creamery, they make small batches, rare flavors and unique products all with very limited supplies.

Not only did they need a fast, reliable but quality printer, they had very specific requirements our Kiaro! had to meet.

Requirements like producing labels that withstand the freezing temperatures necessary for storing ice cream or delivering flexibility to meet continuous product rotation.

You see, instead of mass producing the same flavors of ice cream, Browndog only makes small batches that rotate and change frequently.

When they found out their ‘cool personality’ didn’t faze the Kiaro! labels (which can withstand temperatures from -65°F to 147°F), they knew they were meant to be together. After all, everyone has baggage. While living with the proverbial cold shoulder can be difficult, it wasn’t a problem for either of them.

Now, Browndog Creamery and the Kiaro! work together to create their own vibrantly cool custom labels printed in-house –labels that love pairing with Browndog’s ice cream cartons!

“The Kiaro! has been a wonderful fit in our business, it allows us to make these very small run labels and customize them to everything that we needed to do.” – Paul Gabriel, Co-Owner, Browndog Creamery

Jody’s Popcorn Labels POP! with the Kiaro! Label Printer!

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

In Virginia Beach, Jody’s Popcorn sells freshly made, caramel coated, chocolate drizzled and savory popcorn snacks. With their unique line of product flavors, they rely on their Kiaro! label printer to produce the famous popcorn labels that pop!

What Makes It Gourmet?

jodys_bagsMichael Katz, Vice President of Jody’s Popcorn, explains, “People often ask what gourmet popcorn is. What gourmet means to us is that we use the highest quality ingredients that we can find because we are very concerned about our flavor profile and the quality of our product.”

We traveled to Virginia Beach to get a taste of what Jody’s Popcorn is made of, and see how they use their QuickLabel printer to make their popcorn labels look as good as their freshly popped batches taste.

It’s About Quality AND Quantity

“Our quality is not just about the product, but the overall experience at Jody’s,” stresses Katz, “At our oceanfront store, we make freshly popped popcorn right there.”

While the quality of their popcorn is priority, their quantity demands (no matter how big or small) are important to them as well.

popcornMichael Katz explains, “The oceanfront store grew in popularity. We had lots of demand for our products, so Jody’s leased facilities that were able to produce much larger quantities of popcorn. We were then able to label that product and offer a much wider variety at our oceanfront store, also satisfying the needs of whole sale customers.”

But with that expansion, Jody’s needed a reliable printer that could take on their growth, as well as take care of quick in-store demands. As the business grew, so did Jody’s product line. It became less affordable to order thousands of popcorn labels for all of their many flavors, changing order sizes, and special requests for custom labeling.

“What we had before was outsource printing,” explains Katz, “We were making a lot of products and sending a lot of products to be outsourced. But the cost of having all that inventory sitting on our shelves didn’t seem to make much sense.”

QuickLabel Meets Jody…

Looking for a short-run labeling solution, Jody’s found QuickLabel Systems and the Kiaro! label printer.

michael_katz_kiaroKatz quickly discovered how easy it was to operate a Kiaro!, stating, “My concern then came, how difficult is that to operate? And it was really very simple. Anybody that could operate a printer can operate this printer.”

“When I first saw the Kiaro!, my initial impression was, ‘Wow! It’s not drab, and I’m not interested in printing anything that’s drab.’ So I really connected with that,” reveals Katz, “Once I looked at it operate, I was impressed with the quality of what was being ‘spit out,’ if you will, as finished product. These labels were just coming off and they were beautiful.”

QuickLabel’s Kiaro! Saved Them Time & Money

“Our ability to flourish in both the promotional products industry and the whole sale business has been greatly enhanced by our ability to create custom labels. That gives us the ability to very quickly customize a package for customers. If a particular customer wants to have their farm store on it or their gift store, we’re able to produce that here, quickly, in our facility and put that on the bag and get it out the door,” Katz states.

“There are times when we find that we forgot to order a pre-printed label and we need it right now, or we’ve ordered it, but there’s a problem at the printing company and they can’t deliver the label at the time we expect,” Katz explains.jodys_labels

He expands,“With the Kiaro!, we not only use it to print our custom labels and small quantity product labels, but we also use it as a back-up printer. We can print exactly the same label we send out for our large-runs of pre-printed labels, and the Kiaro! labels look indistinguishable from an outsourced label. It is really a wonderful situation.”

“The Kiaro! printer has saved Jody’s time and production. The amount of time it takes for us to produce a custom job has decreased greatly. We can literally have somebody walk into the printing area and say ‘I need this’ and turn it around in 10-15 minutes,” concludes Katz.

Browndog Creamery Keeps it Cool with the Kiaro!

Posted on by Kelsey Sullivan

Browndog Creamery’s Micro Batch Gourmet Ice Cream Meets Micro Batch Label Printing

With an ever-changing variety of ice cream flavors as evocative as Dragon Bite, Tuscan Sun, Buttered Berry Brioche, and French Press Mocha, the owners of Browndog Creamery needed a labeling solution that could adapt to label changes on-the-fly.

For example, they may need 20  labels for Triple Vanilla this morning, and 15 for Mystery Cookie this afternoon.  Luckily for owners Brian Scherle and Paul Gabriel, they found the Kiaro! label printer to print labels for their pints of ice cream on demand, in the exact quantity that they need.

Watch How Browndog Uses the Kiaro! for All Their Gourmet Creations:

Browndog Creamery, a “micro-creamery” located in the heart of downtown Northville Michigan, west of Detroit, brings customers delicious and unique handcrafted ice creams.

Being a micro-creamery, as explained by co-owner Paul Gabriel, “basically means that we make our ice cream in very small batches. We’re not a mass factory where we make thousands of gallons of ice cream. We make about four or five gallons at a time for each flavor.”

Browndog Creamery’s unique flavor combinations are all created in-house by Gabriel and Scherle. “I always tell people I refuse to make butter pecan, so instead we make a bourbon pecan,” said Gabriel. “For our Cinco de Mayo we made a Holy Guacamole ice cream, and that’s the type of stuff that we really like: the really unique, creative stuff that you’re not going to find anywhere else. “

The Perfect Label For Every Single Batch

Browndog rotates flavors of ice creams so frequently because each batch made in their micro-creamery is only a few gallons. Even before they opened their business, they knew that using pre-printed labels wouldn’t make any sense, because buying minimum orders of labels would lead to excessive costs and way too much label inventory for their small backroom.

gourmet ice cream labels“I knew we would be running small batches of ice cream and I didn’t want to take an inventory of a hundred or a thousand labels of one flavor because I knew we might only need ten,” said Gabriel. “The Kiaro! has been a wonderful fit in our business to allow us to make these very small run labels and customize them to everything that we needed to do.”

“Being able to create products and without having to go to a mass printing,” has been a boon to business said Scherle. “Using the Kiaro! printer to label our ice cream, and to create amazing and attractive packaging is just part and parcel of creating our products.”

Scherle described his first impressions of the Kiaro!, “When it was delivered I found that it’s bright purple. Upon seeing it, I was pleasantly surprised that the Kiaro! looks as fun as it is to use.  It’s a good addition to our shop.”

Kiaro! Labels Handle Freezing Temps

One of Browndog’s chief concerns was whether or not their Kiaro! labels would stand up to the freezing temperatures necessary for storing ice cream.

“The synthetic material that we use for the pint labels is pretty resistant to water best label printerand we actually label the pints after they’ve gone through the freezing process,” said Gabriel.  “We were a little skeptical about how they would adhere to a frozen pint, but the Kiaro! labels do quite well.”

“It’s surprising how fast the printer is,” said Gabriel.  “We have taught some of our employees how to use the Kiaro! and besides its flexibility and other benefits, it’s also very easy to use. The first time one of our managers used it she thought, ‘oh goodness I have to print out 150 labels that’s going to take all day’ and they started to come out and she was trying hard to keep up with the printer, and roll labels up so they weren’t all over the floor, it was actually quite humorous,” added Scherle. “The print speed is amazing.”
