- the required information is not stated prominently, with conspicuousness and in terms that it is read and understood by consumers under customary conditions of purchase and use the container or its fill is misleading

Please Welcome Trevor Hernandez, Toronto-Based Sales & Service Technician!
We are proud and excited to introduce you to Trevor Hernandez, who will fill the newly-created position of Sales and Service Technician for the Greater Toronto Area. We are excited to welcome him to the QuickLabel Family. Trevor will join Ruddy Bolanos in serving QuickLabel customers in Toronto.
We got a chance to interview Trevor about his family, hobbies, interests, his excitement in getting to work with our wonderful customers, and of course, the Kiaro! inkjet label printer.
QuickLabel: Are you excited to join the QuickLabel team? Why?
Trevor Hernandez: Very excited! I spent the last 14 years working for a very large corporate company and I have seen the best and worst of times. Over the years the company has been going through a lot of changes and ultimately I did not see myself being happy there. I am looking forward to being part of such a close knit team at QuickLabel.
QL: What jobs have you previously had?
TH: As I mentioned before I worked for one large I.T corporation for almost all my working career. There I held many positions including hardware service technician, network support, account management, and inside sales. Before that I worked one year as a bench technician for a company that manufactured TV broadcast equipment and at McDonald’s for a whole 2 days!
QL: What do you think it will be like to serve QuickLabel printer customers in the Toronto area?
TH: I think it will be challenging and fun. Toronto and the surrounding area are huge with loads of opportunity. We not only want to keep our current customers happy and satisfied but grow to serve new customers and prove to them that QuickLabel is #1!.
QL: Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I went to Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto Ontario. I graduated with high honors from their 3 year Electronics Engineering Technologist program. It enabled me to get a job even before I officially graduated.
QL: Where did you grow up?
The first 13 years of my life was spent in the city. Once I started high school my family moved out to the suburbs and have been a suburbanite ever since. I currently live about .5hr west of Toronto.
QL: What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have any hobbies or fun interests?
TH: I used to have a lot of hobbies and things that kept me busy outside of work but now with 2 young kids the majority of my time is spent with them. I love playing sports, running, biking, hiking, graphic art, cooking, and traveling.
QL: Tell us a little about your family.
TH: I have a wife, Kelly whom I met back in high school. She works full-time in the insurance industry and is a great Mom as well. We have a daughter, Jazmin who is 6 years old and likes taekwondo, soccer, and of course princesses, and a one year old son, Xavier, who loves to eat and explore everything.
QL: Do you have pets?
TH: Yes, we have a Green cheek Conure (small parrot) named KG who we bought for our daughter’s 1st birthday.
QL: Do you have a favorite place that you have traveled?
TH: We have not made it out of the Americas yet but have many plans to do so. My wife and I really love going to Miami. There is so much to see and do and of course the weather is always beautiful! We hope to get out to the UK and India in the near future.
QL: What are some of your favorite things?
TH: I really enjoy great food, good music, a good workout and a good story. Whenever I experience any one of those things my whole mood and perspective usually changes for the better. I also really relish quiet time alone whenever I can get it!
QL: What are you looking forward to most in your new position here?
TH: Seeing that it is a new role within the company and encompassing both technical and sales responsibilities, I am very excited to bring what I have learned and experienced over the years in previous roles to the table. Being a hybrid role in a new territory should provide all the challenges I need to keep me motivated and working hard.
QL: Has anything been surprising so far to you in your new job?
TH: Astro-Med is a “publicly traded company that runs like a family business” – I have heard this quite often from a few different people in my short time here. This is kind of shocking to me as I did not think this could be possible. I am quickly realizing that it is possible and everyone here seems to genuinely care about each other and willing to help out in any situation. It is a nice surprise and change from the norm.
QL: What is your favorite QuickLabel product and why?
TH: Well, I do like the Kiaro! for obvious reasons, however, I always catch myself marveling at the sight of a QLS-4100 Xe. I think it is a very cool machine and has a lot of uses and applications in today’s world.

The Giving Thanks Label Contest was established as an effort for us to give back to our customers and friends, while working with the contestants to support local communities this holiday season.
For winning, J.O. Spice will receive $500 which will be donated on their behalf to their chosen charity: The Chesapeake Bay Foundation. All 21 employees of J.O. Spice Company are also receiving award-winning Kringle Pastries baked and custom-labeled by O&H Danish Bakery in Racine, WI.
The winning label was designed by Graphic Designer Kathleen Duncan, who has been with J.O. Spice for almost 9 years, and started with the company just after high school. Duncan has been designing labels to be printed by the Kiaro! label printer since JO Spice first acquired their Kiaro! in August 2012.
Kathleen is “a creative, team-player, who is really into what she does, and cares about the company as much as anyone,” said Ginger Ports, Sales and Marketing Manager of J.O. Spice.
Using their Kiaro! inkjet label printer, O&H Danish Bakery will print custom kringle labels featuring Duncan’s winning design on each of the Kringles that it sends to J.O Spice.
The Giving Thanks Label Design Contest was held on Facebook, and participants were encouraged to create labels with the theme of “giving thanks.”
J.O. Spice’s winning label received over 170 likes during the voting period. Their label stated that they were “Giving Thanks to the Chesapeake Bay,” and that, “the Chesapeake Bay Foundation never takes a day off from conservation.”
“We picked the Chesapeake Bay Foundation,” said Ports, “because the Bay plays such a key role in what we, the seafood market, and watermen all do”
“We’re thankful for the Bay,” she continued, “and without the Chesapeake Bay Foundation the watermen wouldn’t have a job, we wouldn’t be able to supply them for their seafood. Without the bay kids wouldn’t be able to play in the ocean. “
“We work with so many family businesses,” said Ports, “and all of us as families depend on the Bay. We need foundations like Chesapeake Bay Foundation that educate people so we can continue on to 4th and 5th generations,” she said , alluding to the fact that J.O. Spice is currently in its 3rd generation of family management with plans for a fourth to start working after finishing their education.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation Communications Coordinator Tom Zolper said, “Thank you so much to Ginger Ports, to the designer of the label, Kathleen Duncan, and to everyone who cares about the Chesapeake. We are touched and grateful for your love of the bay, and for your support of our work.”
Including J.O. Spice, 15 different companies from across the country entered the Giving Thanks Label Design Contest, and tallied over 515 total votes in the contest. “It was a wonderful way for small businesses to show what they’re thankful for,” said Ports, “it was a fun, friendly competition.”
Ginger Ports was familiar with some of the other entrants, “I actually travel to Key West,” said Ports, “and I’ve had Key Lime Pie from Kermit’s!” she said. Kermit’s Key Lime Pie was the 2nd place finisher in the contest, “the best thing to get there is the one covered in chocolate!” exclaimed Ports.
J.O. Spice’s most known product is the No. 1 Brand Seafood Seasoning, served in Maryland restaurants. “If you’ve eaten crab in a Maryland restaurant,” said Ports, “you’ve had our Number One.”
“We couldn’t be happier with the participation in our first-ever Giving Thanks Label Design Contest,” says , Eric Pizzuti, General Manager of QuickLabel Systems. “We enjoyed the opportunity to give back to our community through the creativity of our customers. We loved and appreciated each and every entry, and I heartily congratulate J.O. Spice and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.”
“Founded in 1967, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the oldest and largest non-profit organization focused exclusively on restoring the Chesapeake to good health,” said Tom Zolper, “One academic journal recently said ‘we may be half way home’ to saving the Bay, with significant reductions in pollution in the past two decades.”
“To finish the job,” Zolper says the, “CBF restores oyster reefs, plants trees and underwater grasses, takes about 35,000 students and teachers on field experiences each year, advocates in three state capitals and in Congress for laws and regulations that aid the Bay, and when necessary, goes to court to fight for progress.

Last week was Pack Expo 2013, and we went out to Las Vegas to launch our new Kiaro! 200 wide-width inkjet label printer, Lustro-Lam laminating solution, and staff the QuickLabel Systems booth.
While we were there with our fantastic team, Michael shot some videos, I took some pictures and we talked with a lot of customers about their experiences with Kiaro! inkjet label printers.
We filmed a few testimonials from satisfied customers, and posted them on YouTube. But, first here’s Joe Quednau introducing the Kiaro! 200.

The first tenets of Just-in-Time manufacturing can be traced back to Henry Ford, the beginnings of Toyota, and even the first grocery chain, Piggly Wiggly*. The true fulfillment of the Just-in-Time revolution happened in the 1950s, when Japan’s car companies became total Just-in-Time manufacturers, and a decade after that when the US, and the rest of the world, followed suit.
Today, companies in all fields of production across the globe manufacture their products just-in-time, because as the Houston Chronicle points out, there are a great many benefits. Mostly, though Just-in-Time keeps inventory low, which in turn lowers warehouse costs, and creates less waste.
David Crompton of Quick Fitting, a Rhode Island manufacturer of push-connect plumbing technologies found that the Just-in-Time model was ideal for his business. The problem, however, was that he couldn’t convert to it, because of his labels.
He ordered-out for his plumbing labels – 10,000 labels at a time. This created the polar opposite of the “lean inventory” he was hoping to achieve. Not only did he waste the pre-printed labels as they became obsolete on his shelves, he was wasting his inventory space and “parking” his money, as he said.
So, David got a Kiaro!.
Just like that, he was Just-in-Time. Obviously, he needed to convert other parts of his production; alter the way he ordered his raw materials. Acquiring the Kiaro! was just one of the changes he made to go to Just-in-Time, which ultimately streamlined his business, and continues to save his company money and time.
So how does the Kiaro! contribute to Just-in-Time manufacturing?
Well, there are a few ways.
Line of Sight Supervision
With the Kiaro!, manufacturers can oversee label design, printing and application at the same time – right in their facility.When using an outside printer, any mistakes made on labels are not recognized and corrected until significant time has passed. For instance – if an outside printer sent Mr. Crompton a batch of labels that all had an error on them, between ordering new labels and waiting for them to arrive, it could take days, even weeks, to get a new roll of pre-printed labels in.
With the Kiaro!, errors are immediately identified. The user can pause printing runs, correct errors instantly, and go right back to printing on demand, on the very next label. The Kiaro! doesn’t waste a single label when starting, ending, or pausing runs.
Eliminates Label Inventory
Arguably, the greatest benefit of Just-in-Time manufacturing is keeping inventory low. Outside print-houses require large minimum orders. Because of this, a manufacturer will order extremely large runs of pre-printed labels, and store them in their facility.
Unfortunately for those manufacturers, the demands of their retailers are often strict – orders can change up-to and including on the day of shipment – leaving them with a new order to place with the outside print-house, and a roll of labels they can’t use, because now they’ve become obsolete. They end up collecting dust, or getting thrown out. Either way – they’re wasted.
The Kiaro! prints on demand, in runs of any size. If an order is changed the day of shipping; that’s not a problem. The Kiaro! prints out however many labels are needed to get the product sent out the door.The Kiaro! prints quickly, at 8 inches per second, so even large print runs are finished quickly.

Browse just for a moment at Eastern Shore Tea’s website and note the first phrase in their description: “Highest quality tea, and beautiful packaging are hallmarks of Eastern Shore Tea.”
The hallmarks of Eastern Shore Tea are their quality and packaging, and when we traveled to Baltimore, MD, that’s exactly what we came to find.
But first: a little about the owner.
Stanley Constantine, owner of Eastern Shore Tea Company and its parent company Baltimore Coffee & Tea, drinks 10 cups of tea every day.
He’s deliberate and engaged, and speaks with a low-end sort of rumble that peaks half an octave higher when he reaches points of interest.
At the mention of his new labels, and the boon in sales since acquiring his new Kiaro! label printer, that octave jumps.
“It’s interesting,” Constantine says, “since we installed the Kiaro! our tea sales have increased an average of about 40%.”
Then he takes a shallow breath, prepping for the big reveal , “Actually, one of our largest grocery chain customers told me that Eastern Shore Tea sales have increased 50% since we installed the Kiaro!.”

“We haven’t changed anything – except the label quality,” says Constantine, when talking about the enormous and sustained 40% jump in tea sales, “I’m pretty convinced that the Kiaro! is responsible.”

“As I said before we’ve changed nothing else. We’ve changed none of our recipes, none of the other elements of our packaging, save for the increased quality of the Kiaro!,” says Constantine.

So the labels look good?
Linda Lang, manager of Eastern Shore Tea Company, and 11-year-employee, thinks so.
“It’s just amazing how good the Kiaro! can make the labels look,” she says, “the colors are rich and bright – it’s just completely changed the way the artwork on the labels looks.”
A Different Approach to Tea
“Eastern Shore teas differ from most national brands in a couple of different areas,” says Constantine. All of their teas are flavored naturally: they use real spices in their teas , not liquid flavorings, so in their teas you’ll find real clove, real cinnamon, real ginger, real lemon grass.
Eastern Shore Tea starts with full leaf tea, and then to increase surface exposure they use a hammer-mill to cut the leaves down to tea-bag size.
The Kiaro! Joins the Eastern Shore
“We brought a Kiaro! in, set it up, and we printed some logos and some of our graphics. I was astounded with the quality. With the Kiaro! printing at 1200dpi,” says Constantine, “we were blown away by the quality.”
“I was thrilled when I saw the Kiaro! labels for the first time,” says Linda Lang, “ it was pretty exciting. It even will reproduce photographs which is really amazing!”
Private Labeling with the Kiaro!
Eastern Shore Tea has seen a large growth in customers requesting private label services, which they are uniquely set up to do because they’re totally vertically integrated.
“The Kiaro! has helped us with that goal,” explains Constantine, “because it’s so easy and effortless for us to create private labels for all of our customers.”
Eastern Shore Tea creates private label teas for major museums, grocers and gourmet food stores around the country, but also for private functions and smaller parties.
“It’s effortless,” says Constantine, “one of our strong points is that our private label minimum is only 24 pieces. The reason it’s so low is because the Kiaro! is just effortless. We can easily print and go to production and it’s out the door the same day. It’s made our life a lot easier.”
Printing Tea Labels on Demand
Eastern Shore Tea went with the Kiaro! because they needed to print labels on demand, and as needed. “In the past we would have to order 10,000 of every single label. Now,” says Constantine, “we print over 300 SKUs on the Kiaro!. The ability to print on demand has saved us an incredible amount of money because we’re stocking only blank labels and we print as we need.”
Linda Lang loves how the Kiaro! has eliminated their inventory of pre-printed labels, “The labels aren’t sitting on the shelf for long periods of time. I never thought I would pay such close attention to labels, but I now realize that in a sense I always have. I’ve always loved shopping, and from a young age would want the candy that looked the prettiest, or the no-tears shampoo in the brightest packaging. So the only thing that has changed in this respect is that I’m slightly more aware of how labels influence my purchases.
There are so many great packaging and label designs out there, I can hardly make it down a grocery store aisle without stopping to take note of at least a handful of labels (unless I’m really hungry!). So, I wanted to share with you 5 of our customers’ labels that we love.
Dave’s Market and Le’s Isle Rose gift shop carry such an abundance of delicious foods and gifts. Their stores are much more pleasant to shop in than the average grocery store. We recently took a trip to Dave’s Market to see how they use their Kiaro! inkjet label printer to print a wide variety of labels for their specialties and prepared foods. Coffee City USA is coffee roaster, and as many might imagine they say it’s always a great day there! The owners are a lovely married couple who decided to open their own coffee roasting company after gaining expertise in the specialty coffee business. Not only do they sell coffee and tea, but a variety of other yummy treats and gifts as well. They LOVE printing vibrant labels with their Vivo! Touch color label printer.
Our Regional Manager, Bill Pizzuti has a favorite label with this wonderful customer based in Ohio. This company supplies fresh cut produce to a wide variety of locations. These include hospitals, restaurants, and catering companies. With their Vivo! Touch color label printer they can easily and quickly print a variety of customized labels to send with their products. Billy likes this Snack Takes label that is placed on packages of fresh crunchy carrot sticks and celery because, “it’s simply succinct, it reminds me that I’m on a diet and should eat healthier foods, it gets applied to a nice light fresh snack which I think is fit for this summertime weather, and it’s from a great company and great customer.” Do you like this label as much as we do?
I LOVE salsa! This delicious salsa was spotted by Cassie Dib, one of our Media Specialists.She was so thrilled and told me, “I was so excited when I found Linda’s salsa at Wal-Mart in my hometown of Oskaloosa! Look at that beautiful flexo-printed label. I had to buy a jar and I must say, the salsa was DELICIOUS!! “ Now I need to send her back to get me some. What’s your favorite food to enjoy with salsa? I’m torn between quesadillas and nachos!
5. Urban Herbs
This company sells their amazing spices straight to chefs. But, not to fret you can order their products easily online. Then, thanks to their products you will be the most famous chef in your family, maybe even in the whole neighborhood! Not only do they have a huge variety of spices, but they also have dried beans, rice, sugars, gourmet and coffee beans. This is a great example of how owning a Kiaro! inkjet color label printer can allow a company to print custom spice labels for private label customers. We also love how the side panel is devoted to “Directions for you” suggesting various ways to use this rub.
